Becoming sound is a small scale, full service recording facility located in rural and beautiful Ymir BC. We provide a fun, focused and professional atmosphere, away from urban busyness, for artists to create new works and develop existing materials. With services ranging from inception to mastered mixes, composition, writing retreats with luxury onsite accommodations and demo packages, Becoming Sound can help you reach your creative potential.


The 2 room studio contains high quality digital and analogue equipment, a professionally trained, experienced and personable engineer coupled with light filled mountain views providing the ideal environment while your ideas are becoming sound.

Shawn's Bio

Shawn Stephenson is a performer, producer, composer, music educator, husband and father of two, living in Ymir, BC. He is an honours graduate in Composition from the prestigious Selkirk College Contemporary Music and Technology Program in Nelson, BC and the recipient of the Fred Sherrat Award for Excellence in Recording Arts and Sciences. Shawn fills his time with private, individual and group music instruction for all ages in guitar, vocals, basic piano, music theory and songwriting at Becoming Sound Studio, located on the rural property he shares with his wife Carla in Ymir. He is also a sought after live sound engineer, records and produces music at his studio and composes music for film and television. In his spare time he is the co-founder, co-artistic director and technical director of the Tiny Lights Festival is his home town. Shawn is known for his entertaining and engaging live performances which can span explosive acoustic guitar, multiple instruments, looping and laptop technology or stripped down, simple and honest songwriting. Shawn’s passion for all things music is always translated into whatever facet of the industry he is engaged in and sharing his knowledge to spark interest in others is where he finds his joy.

LIVE SOUND

Every year we have over 600 applications for the Tiny Lights festival, from them we have a large line up with the majority of the artists being from BC. Becoming Sound works closely with these clients either through artistic direction or live sound engineering.
